Here’s an interesting article on MSNBC.com that highlights a growing trend in Japan. Consumers there are increasingly foregoing new PC’s for handheld devices and fresher technology like smart tv, dvr and internet friendly game consoles.
It’s true that growing PC reliability has something to do with the decline in sales, but younger consumers are more frequently drawn to mobile devices and tech companies are utilizing their human capital to put out products that are attractive to them.
Will the trend cross the pond? That’s debatable, but a good indicator might be Time Magazine’s recent decision to crown Apple’s iPhone the "Invention of the Year".
