Reporters often filter information, so it may not be presented exactly as intended. A better approach is to use a letter to the editor or an op-ed essay. Both allow for clear and rational presentation of ideas.

For business executives, offering a viewpoint based on real-world experience is a powerful tool. It helps build the company’s image as a leader in its field, setting it apart from competitors.

Letters to the Editor and Op-Ed Essays

Letters to the editor are typically three to seven paragraphs long. They respond to current news stories and provide an opportunity to express opinions on relevant issues. The first paragraph should introduce the writer and the topic. For example: “As the owner of an insurance agency, I would like to express support for the proposed DUI bill in our state legislature…”

The middle paragraphs should present compelling arguments supporting the opinion. For example: “Alcohol caused 41.1% of highway fatalities in Virginia in 2002. Drivers want lower premiums. Not drinking and driving helps achieve that goal…”

The last paragraph should summarize the message. For example: “A combination of personal responsibility, lower blood-alcohol limits, and strict enforcement will reduce alcohol-related deaths and save lives.”

Op-Ed Essays for Broader Discussions

Op-ed essays are different from letters. They are longer and offer more space for thoughtful discussion. These essays can be up to 600 words and are often given special prominence in the newspaper. An op-ed allows for a deeper look at important issues, presenting long-term solutions rather than just immediate concerns.

For example, if a city is considering a regulation that could harm business, an op-ed can explore both the immediate impact and possible solutions. It can also present past successes and address opposing views.
