Facebook in Need of Major PR Counsel

Facebook finds itself in the middle of controversy as a result of data from 50 million accounts allegedly deceptively being used by Cambridge Analytica to persuade voters in the United States presidential election. There are additional concerns about similar tactics being used to swing the Brexit vote and affect the French presidential election. The issue is complicated and has been building over time, but the responses by Facebook have been minimal and half-hearted. The company has been slow to acknowledge its role and get out in front of the allegations. Only now, as its problems boil over and Facebook stock is in free fall, has the company slowly begun to move. These steps have been tentative and lacking authority. Government investigations, legislative action and fines are on the horizon. Still, there has been little visible activity by company leadership. Clearly, good PR counsel is needed and should be heeded. Facebook needs to get out in front of this quickly, put leadership on the news media, show some contrition and take responsibility. We’ve been particularly impressed with Jim Cramer’s CNBC and Action Alerts criticism of Facebook leadership and his recommendations to overcome their problems.
