Cities Use Social Media for Citizens Views

Small groupIt is the foundation of democracy to receive feedback about policies impacting the citizens of a community. Such information is often obtained from town hall meetings and other gatherings. City government and politicians need that information. Now, a number of communities are trying a new software that allows cities to monitor social media commentary about issues. However, from our perspective, this should be seen as only one tool, and possibly not the best tool, to obtain citizens views. Not everyone participates in social media and the demographics of social media don’t always correspond to the demographics of a city. Also, social media can become a place to rant instead of praise, so a cities might only be hearing only one side of an issue. Axios explains more about the software.
